How to fill Income-Tax ITR-2 Schedule-112A of Excel Utility

This method is not applicable from FY 2020-21 as the I-T Dept. has launched a new JSON utility which has an inbuilt method to import multiple entries through a CSV template. The template can be obtained from within the JSON utility.

Help with the new template:
1. Column No.1a (Share/Unit acquired) : Use "BE" for entries pertaining to assets acquired before 01-02-2018.
2. For assets acquired on or after 01-02-2018, a single consolidated entry is enough. This entry can be made manually in the utility and need not import through template.

Background: Read this
Purpose: Many users found the Excel utility more convenient than Java utility. This is a simple workaround to fill the Schedule-112A in Excel utility from the data maintained in their own excel sheets. This is much simple and requires only knowledge on how to copy-paste.

Step 1: Open Excel > File menu > Options > Trust Centre > Trust Centre settings > Macro settings > Select "Disable all macros with notification". Depending on the version of Excel, the menus may differ slightly. See menus for Excel 2007.

Step 2: Download the latest Excel utility from the Income-Tax e-filing website, and extract the zip file.

Step 3: Open the Excel utility. Click "Enable Editing" if prompted. Click "Enable Content" on "Security warning - Macros have been disabled". Go to Schedule-112A and add the required number of rows by clicking the button - "Add Row(s)". Save and close the utility and Excel.

Step 4: Open Excel > File menu > Options > Trust Centre > Trust Centre settings > Trusted Documents > Click "Clear" button to clear all trusted documents so that they are no longer trusted.

Step 5: Open the Excel utility. Click "Enable Editing" if prompted. DON'T CLICK "Enable Content" on Security warning - Macros have been disabled.

Step 6: Select each set of cells column-wise from the sheet where you have maintained the transactions, COPY, and in the Excel utility, PASTE VALUES ONLY in the restpective columns. To paste values only, use the drop down below the paste button and select paste special, or use CTRL+ALT+V and then select "values". There would be 7 columns to copy-paste.

Step 7: Now click "Enable Content" on "Security warning - Macros have been disabled". Fill the rest of the sheets and proceed to generate XML as usual.

Complete.

    1. Ideally, one should keep track of his transactions in excel or a dedicated software. Other options are transaction reports and capital gain reports provided by broker.
